The alternatives are sparse: a handful of small cremation companies scattered across the country, many operating in the Algarve or Lisbon, with limited coverage in the interior and north. Many pet owners only learn about cremation options after the fact, from their vet, in their most vulnerable moment.

95% of Portuguese pet owners consider their animal a family member. Yet the infrastructure for pet end-of-life is decades behind what exists for humans. The emotional gap between how people feel about their pets and how the system handles their death is enormous — and growing.
