The Problem

The EU Right to Repair Directive (Directive 2024/1799), effective July 31, 2026, creates sweeping obligations for manufacturers of household appliances and consumer electronics:

  1. Mandatory post-warranty repair — Manufacturers must offer repair services for technically repairable goods even AFTER the legal guarantee expires, potentially for up to 10 years after a product model leaves the market.
  2. Spare parts availability — Must provide spare parts, repair manuals, and diagnostic tools at "reasonable prices" for years.
  3. No repair obstruction — Cannot use software locks, DRM, or contractual clauses to prevent independent repairers from fixing products.
  4. Extended warranty on repair — If a consumer repairs under warranty, the guarantee extends by at least 12 months.
  5. Transparent pricing — Must provide a "European Repair Information Form" with clear cost breakdown before repair.

Most manufacturers — especially mid-market brands and importers who don't have Apple-style service networks — have zero infrastructure for this. They need: spare parts catalog management, repair network orchestration, warranty tracking, compliance reporting, and integration with the upcoming EU Online Repair Platform (2027).
